Frequently Asked Questions
- Will the bonding strips hold under tough conditions?
The bonding strips are used in heavy industrial applications such as large
truck and bus bodies, rapid transit rail cars, and some parts of aircraft.
Highest level bonding is achieved by following the supplied instructions
explicitly.
- Do I have to remove bottom paint?
All paint and wax, but not the gel coat, along the 3-inch application area
is removed.
- Is the rail flexible?
The rail, made of extruded, engineered polyvinylchloride, is flexible and
indestructible. Curves of extreme degree can be accommodated with the use
of a hair dryer.
- Why does the rail come in 9-foot sections?
This is the maximum for UPS shipments. A longer flexible rail is very
awkward to install (a 20-footer could take 4 or 5 people). Instructions
are included for butting sections to one another to achieve any length.
- What size boat does
THE SMART-RAIL®
fit?
This product has been installed on boats from 13 ft. to 94 ft. with
excellent reported results. See our
installation list for boats that successfully use rails from Smart
Marine Products Corp.
- Is the rail affected by sunlight?
A standard, well-tested UV inhibitor is added to the engineered,
polyvinylchloride during extrusion.
- Why wasn't my boat manufactured with the same type of rail?
The hull could not be removed from the mold with a protruding rail
attached. It would add many thousands of dollars to the selling price of
the boat.
- Can my boat be lifted by travel lift?
Yes. Protective blocks are used to prevent damage.
- Can the rails be removed?
Yes, by applying heat to the rail and carefully using a chisel and light
hammer to dislodge the structural adhesive.
